Supplementary steps to enhance audio output.

The following post will generally produce the output of a more sharpened and amplified song. Previews not far below.

Tools that will be used/installed :

Preview (First minute: 48kbps, wma, non enhanced/Second minute: 48kbps, wma, enhanced[Windows Movie Maker did a bad but stable job on this one]

Firstly, you must have Winamp installed. If you haven't, head on to this link or click here for the direct link

After installing, you will need to get the plugin mentioned above. Link here or direct link here. Install after downloading it.

Part I: Applying the DSP

  1. Now, after both are installed, head on to the Preference window, (Ctrl+P while Winamp window is active, or selecting Option->Preference on the main window) then scroll down on the pane on the left until you find DSP/Effect under the category of Plug-ins.
  2. Select Enhancer v0.17 [dsp_enh.dll]. Anything highlighted means it's currently active.
  3. A window should pop-up(emailware). Select Cancel and you should see a few sliders.
  4. To enable these settings, turn on the Enhancer by first clicking, Power. [Select Boost if you want it]
  5. Select Preset then choose General improvements. You may customise the sliders whenever you feel like it. [Turn off Boost if effects get too sharp or pull the slider leftwards]

You will notice the improved 'quality' of your audio after applying the DSP.

Now, you may want to 'save' these settings to be transfered to your portable audio player, to do so, continue on to the second part.

(Optional)Part II: 'Saving' the effects

  1. Apply the DSP/Effects you want to your current liking.
  2. Open the Preference window, then select Output.
  3. Now, select "Nullsoft Disk Writer v2.14 [out_disk.dll]. (Highlighted means active)
  4. Select Configure.
  5. Change the directory to wherever you like.
  6. Uncheck everything, then select Ok. This will make winamp churn out a raw .wav file with the Enhancer's settings on the original audio. [Caution: The next step will produce a bloat file ~50MB](Customise where needed; Save as dialog, Convert to format, etc)
  7. Play the song you would like to apply the effect on. Winamp will show that it's playing but at a faster speed and no sound will be heard.
  8. Press Stop when the song is done.
  9. Navigate to the folder where you saved your song. You should be able to see the new .wav audio file.
  10. Load this .wav into Winamp and follow my previous post and convert it to your desired format/kbps.
  11. Load the output .wma/.aac/.ogg/.flac into your music player then clean all temporary files created(.wav and .wma/aac/ogg/flac).

Notes;

If you want to have your audio back instead of Writing every song, Navigate to Preference->Output->"Nullsoft DirectSound Output v2.47 [out_ds.dll] (WinXP/Vista/7) or "Nullsoft WaveOut Output v2.11 [out_wave.dll] (Win95/98).

Congratulations. End of tutorial. Enjoy your toned up songs.
