Bass Boost with YOU WA SHOCK! for Winamp

A simple DSP that adds more bass to the audio. Has 4 different presets. Adjust knob to change intensity of preset. Really simple GUI. Nothing much to say really.

Works very nicely with MultiDSP-> Enhancer v017 + WideSound

Also works great for cheap headsets I suppose if there's no bass in them headpieces.

PseudoSurround with Widesound DSP for Winamp

So yeah, another neat plugin that adds a delay then mixes both L/R channels to produce a false surround effect. Tested mainly on headphones, speakers produce awkward effects.

Supplementary steps to enhance audio output.

The following post will generally produce the output of a more sharpened and amplified song. Previews not far below.

Tools that will be used/installed :

Preview (First minute: 48kbps, wma, non enhanced/Second minute: 48kbps, wma, enhanced[Windows Movie Maker did a bad but stable job on this one]

Firstly, you must have Winamp installed. If you haven't, head on to this link or click here for the direct link

After installing, you will need to get the plugin mentioned above. Link here or direct link here. Install after downloading it.

Part I: Applying the DSP

  1. Now, after both are installed, head on to the Preference window, (Ctrl+P while Winamp window is active, or selecting Option->Preference on the main window) then scroll down on the pane on the left until you find DSP/Effect under the category of Plug-ins.
  2. Select Enhancer v0.17 [dsp_enh.dll]. Anything highlighted means it's currently active.
  3. A window should pop-up(emailware). Select Cancel and you should see a few sliders.
  4. To enable these settings, turn on the Enhancer by first clicking, Power. [Select Boost if you want it]
  5. Select Preset then choose General improvements. You may customise the sliders whenever you feel like it. [Turn off Boost if effects get too sharp or pull the slider leftwards]

You will notice the improved 'quality' of your audio after applying the DSP.

Now, you may want to 'save' these settings to be transfered to your portable audio player, to do so, continue on to the second part.

(Optional)Part II: 'Saving' the effects

  1. Apply the DSP/Effects you want to your current liking.
  2. Open the Preference window, then select Output.
  3. Now, select "Nullsoft Disk Writer v2.14 [out_disk.dll]. (Highlighted means active)
  4. Select Configure.
  5. Change the directory to wherever you like.
  6. Uncheck everything, then select Ok. This will make winamp churn out a raw .wav file with the Enhancer's settings on the original audio. [Caution: The next step will produce a bloat file ~50MB](Customise where needed; Save as dialog, Convert to format, etc)
  7. Play the song you would like to apply the effect on. Winamp will show that it's playing but at a faster speed and no sound will be heard.
  8. Press Stop when the song is done.
  9. Navigate to the folder where you saved your song. You should be able to see the new .wav audio file.
  10. Load this .wav into Winamp and follow my previous post and convert it to your desired format/kbps.
  11. Load the output .wma/.aac/.ogg/.flac into your music player then clean all temporary files created(.wav and .wma/aac/ogg/flac).

Notes;

If you want to have your audio back instead of Writing every song, Navigate to Preference->Output->"Nullsoft DirectSound Output v2.47 [out_ds.dll] (WinXP/Vista/7) or "Nullsoft WaveOut Output v2.11 [out_wave.dll] (Win95/98).

Congratulations. End of tutorial. Enjoy your toned up songs.

On reducing file size for mp3 files.

So first off yeh, this post will be about how to reduce your music file sizes by 70% tops(3x more music on your music players!) or 15% depending on the bitrate, without significant quality reduction on 70% yeh ?

So if your interested read on yeh ?

Figure 1 : File size before conversionFigure 2 : File size after conversion

Results:

System Of A Down - Chop Suey.wma(96kbps, 2,525KB, streamable)

System Of A Down - Chop Suey.aac (96kbps, 2,500KB)

System Of A Down - Chop Suey.mp3(320kbps, 8,322KB, streamable)

The objective is to convert the older mp3 file format, to either newer format, aac or wma, and to lower the bitrate. Yeh ?

Materials needed would be Winamp (preferably 5.54) and your mp3 file (a 320kbps would be able to shave 70%, 128kbps with only up to 15%).

Procedure :

1. Open your winamp, if you don't already have it, you can get it at http://www.winamp.com/player.

2. Add your music file into the playlist. [Shortcut Key : L]

3. Right click the file in the playlist, select Send To: , then choose Format Converter.

4. Here you would have a choice, either you want to choose the Apple's AAC format [iPod compatible] or Window's WMA format. They both would end up the same-ish. If your choosing WMA proceed to section Procedure[A]: else if your choosing AAC then proceed to Procedure[B]: .

*Note* Some older music players might have compatiblity issues with the AAC file format, lower bitrates, and the newer WMA 10.0 encoding format.

Procedure[A] :

1. After you have the Format Converter Configuration windows open, set the configuration as follow.Figure 3 : Configuration for WMA format

2. Customise where needed then press Ok.

3. The output file would be in .wma format and the size would have a significant change without audible quality loss.

Procedure[B] :

1. After you have the Format Converter Configuration windows open, set the configuration as follow.Figure 4 : Configuration for AAC format

2. Customise where needed then press Ok.

3. The output file would be in .aac format and the size would have a significant change without audible quality loss.

Discussion:

On the older music players should the problem of File Format Error occur, change the Encoder Format to Windows Media Audio 9.2.

Conclusion:

The newer WMA,AAC format > MP3 format.

I personally choose 48kbps as my bitrate as I don't use earphones much. This saves me 85% size and 6x more songs :/ compared to 96kbps.
